Warm Weather Could Mean Flooding

Story Published: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:23 PM EST
Story Updated: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:23 PM EST

(WSYR-TV Syracuse, NY)   After a couple of days of sunshine and temperatures in the mid 40s here in central New York we expect a brief cool down. A weak cold front will drop south out of Canada later tonight. While there will be little in the way of weather associated with this front (other than a few clouds) it will help to deliver some slight cooler air for Tuesday. A ridge of high pressure will build back over us for the middle of the week and our temperature should rise again, this time we could crack 50 degrees. This same area of high pressure should keep us dry into the start of Thursday. By Thursday, a large area of low pressure moving through the central US will begin to make its presence felt around here with increasing clouds and a few light showers. Southeast winds ahead of this approaching storm will help transport an increasing amount of moisture so our chance for rain goes up Friday. For a while Friday night into Saturday the rain could come down hard. In spite of the rain our temperatures should stay mild right through the weekend.

Flood Threat Builds on the Plains

Story Published: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:29 PM EST
Story Updated: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:29 PM EST

(AccuWeather, Inc. State College, PA)   Steady rain will develop on the Plains today as a storm system approaches. The rain will slowly press northward and eastward across the central and northern Plains into tonight, soaking much of this area through Tuesday. The rain alone will not be heavy enough to cause flooding problems. However, combined with runoff from melting snow, flood waters could submerge some of the low-lying and urban areas on the northern Plains. As the storm plods eastward later this week, similar problems are expected in the Ohio Valley and Appalachians. The snowpack from the Dakotas into Wisconsin and Iowa currently contains as much as 6 inches of equivalent liquid water in spots. While this storm may not bring about widespread flooding, some rivers will start to rise and continue to do so in coming weeks as snow keeps melting and more storms sweep through. This means that major flooding problems could loom on the horizon.

Damaging Thunderstorm Threat

Story Published: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:32 PM EST
Story Updated: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:32 PM EST

(AccuWeather, Inc. State College, PA)   Wet weather will overspread the Plains today as a storm begins its journey eastward from the Rockies. On the southern Plains, unsettled conditions could even spark a few violent thunderstorms. The rain will come as a storm emerges onto the Plains and soaks a vast portion of this area before meandering eastward during the middle of the week. On the southern Plains, rumbles of thunder will accompany the rain at times today. While conditions remain unfavorable for a widespread severe weather outbreak, a few storms in eastern Texas and Oklahoma could still become strong. Oklahoma City and Dallas are just two of the many cities at risk for flooding rainfall, howling winds and hail from these isolated storms before the day comes to a close. Travelers will have to take it slow in these brief, blinding downpours and be prepared for ponding on roadways and the danger of hydroplaning. Tuesday into Wednesday, thunderstorms will advance eastward, prowling over the lower Mississippi Valley.

Story Updated: Monday, March 8, 2010 at 10:32 PM EST

(AccuWeather, Inc. State College, PA)   A major storm that began on Monday in the southwest will bring damaging winds, flooding rain, and blizzard conditions to respective areas of Japan through midweek. Winds to 60 mph will affect most of Japan. Heavy rain will lead to localized flooding. Across northern Honshu and Hokkaido, it will be cold enough for snow. One to two feet of snow will fall. Winds to 60 mph will create blizzard conditions. Heavy snow hit Hokkaido over the weekend. Fifteen inches of snow fell in Wakkanai on Sunday, brining the snow depth to 3 feet. Major disruptions including travel delays, power outages, and even airport closures are expected.
