The Central New York Weather Center got its start back
in 2003, as the brainchild of aspiring meteorologist and
webmaster Carson Metcalf. Back then the weather source
was called Weather Team 4, with a fourth grade audience,
and 4 team members at Lanigan Elementary School. It was
a team effort to update the website and post new weather
information on a bulletin board for students. Weather
Team 5 began in late 2004, with a fifth grade audience,
and 5 members. Instead of going on with a team, Carson
decided to start a weather service of his own. Coming up
with the name and mission of The Central New York
Weather Center took some time, but finally it launched
in 2005. Later that year, Carson obtained an official
partnership with AccuWeather, Inc. In early 2006, plans
for a new website, the one you're on right now, began.
Due to the comments and feedback from visitors, the new
site first hit the web as a beta in late November of
that year. Carson switched over to his own domain, where
you are now, on November 23, 2007. Now, this is the
official, one-and-only site. As of 2010, the website has
shown tremendous growth in hits and views, and is still
the number one independent weather source in Central New
York. Carson Metcalf is the current Chief
Operations Director, and General Manager of The Central
New York Weather Center. Carson founded the website in
2005, after having two prior names and teams. Carson's
career in local weather started in 1997. He has received
several awards, and lots of recognition for his work in
weather and on the web. Carson has worked closely with
several local news, weather, and media professionals in
the Syracuse market. These include John DiPasquale,
Janelle Reichert, Keith Kobland, Tom Hauf, Donna Adamo,
Liz Ayers, Frank Kracher, Maureen Green, Maureen McCann,
and Dave Longley. He was a meteorology and broadcasting
shadow at WTVH-TV from October 2003 to August 2008.
Carson switched stations to WSYR-TV in February 2009. He
has participated in Winter and Severe Weather webcasts
with WSYR-TV since 2007. Carson is also very involved
with his community. He has participated in many
activities and clubs within the Fulton School District,
designs websites for local organizations, and has
volunteered with the Fulton Public Library since 2005.
Many awards and honors have been received by Carson,
including The New York State Comptroller's Award for
Public Service and an Award for Excellence in Unerring
Weather Accuracy in 2006, New York State Volunteer of
the Year in 2007, Top Honors in Local Technology
Concepts in 2008, and the FBLA-rated State's Best
Website in 2009. Carson is a certified and trained Storm
Spotter and Tracker for the National Weather Service in
Buffalo, and has been given a 9 out of 10 rating by The
Weather Channel for on-air forecasting presentations.
